Meeting of the Regional Working Group on IUU Fishing

March 06, 2017 – The first Meeting of the CRFM/OSPESCA/WECAFC-FAO Regional Working Group on Illegal Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (RWG IUU) was held 1-2 March 2017 at the UN House in Barbados.  The RWG IUU was established at the 15th Session of WECAFC which took place in 2014 in Trinidad and Tobago.

The objective of the RWG IUU, as articulated in its Terms of Reference, is to improve coordination and cooperation between national organisations and institutions responsible for Monitoring Control and Surveillance in support of the common efforts to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU Fishing.

The work undertaken by the RWG IUU will contribute to a number of actions under the politically endorsed CLME+ Strategic Action Programme including actions 2.6, 4.3, 5.2 and 6.9.  The RWG IUU will also contribute to the development of the Regional Plan of Action for IUU Fishing under Output 2.1 of the UNDP/GEF CLME+ Project.

The Working Group meeting was convened by CRFM with support from the WECAFC Secretariat.  A number of countries, as well as regional and international organisations participated in the meeting.

Financial support to host the Regional Working Group meeting was provided by the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration and the UNDP/GEF CLME+ Project.
